Spotted hyenas live in matriarchal groups and the females are especially ruthless. It is believed this is so their offspring can thrive even when limited food is available. Often, motherhood is shown and honored as nurturing and caring, which it is, but I wanted to reference another part of motherhood, the willingness to fight for a daughter’s future and success.

Eastern Fence Lizards in Regency era clothing. ”Sense and Sensibility” makes me think about contrasting temperaments. Fire and water seemed the best symbols for opposite natures so they became aspects of the first two paintings. In the third painting the tree represents the relationship between the two figures. A tree and its forest die or flourish based on fire and water. If only fire (heat) or only water is present, the tree will die, too much of either and it will suffer. Only when the two are in balance and kept in check does the tree thrive. The two opposites can stop each other, but they can’t change the nature of the other, nor can they adjust themselves to be more like their opposite. If fire and water tried to compromise and unify into an amalgamation they would both cease to exist.

John Stuart Mill's wrote, "It is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied; better to be Socrates dissatisfied than a fool satisfied. And if the fool, or the pig, is of a different opinion, it is only because they only know their own side of the question.” During college I was part of the Illinois Wesleyan Philosophy Club and someone came up with T-shirts that said"Better to be a duck dissatisfied than a rabbit satisfied," a play on the above quote and the famous Fliegende Blätter Duck- Rabbit illusion. I always liked the idea that questioning and debating and still not being satisfied, still questioning, was preferable to listening to and quietly accepting whatever was told to you.
